Bravery of the Sahaba

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful


Talhah ibn Ubaydullah. He was one of the 10 sahaba who were promised Jannah. The 10 sahaba are Abu Bakar As-Siddiq, Umar ibn Al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Talhah ibn Ubaydillah, Zubair ibn Al-Awwam, Saad ibn Abi Waqas, Abdul Rahman ibn Auf, Abu Ubaidah ibn Al-Jarrah and Said ibn Zayd.


Talhah ra is Abu Bakar's cousin. He became Muslim through Abu Bakar and he is one of the earliest to accept Islam. He was famous for his role in the Battle of Uhud but he died in the Battle of Jamal(Battle of Jamal and Battle of Siffin are the two battles between Muslims in the history of Islam. Very sad story I would say).


Talhah earned the name of As-Syahidul Al-Hayy(Syahid yang hidup) during the Battle of Uhud. Why he got this name? Do you remember during Uhud, Muslims almost lose the battle and the Prophet was dangerously exposed to the Mushrikin. At that time, there are only 11 of Ansar and 1 Muhajirin(Talhah) on his side. The Prophet saw said:


"The one who repulses these people from us will be my companion in Jannah"


"I will Ya Rasulullah!" shouted Talhah.


"No, stick to your position Talhah" the Prophet saw replied.


And then, a man from Ansar volunteered and the Prophet saw agreed. He fought until he was killed. The Prophet went further up the mountain with the mushrikin still in close pursuit; wanting to kill the Prophet saw.


"Isn't there someone to combat them?" he asked.


"I will Ya Rasulullah!" Talhah ra again volunteered but the Prophet saw ordered him to maintain his position.


Another person immediately came forward, fought and was killed. This continued until everyone who stood by the Prophet was martyred except Talhah ra.


"Now, yes," signalled the Prophet, and Talhah went into battle. Talhah ra had no concern other than to defend Prophet saw. He lost all his fingers protecting Prophet saw. In one narration it is mentioned that Talhah ra said, “Is it only that what I lose?” Prophet saw said, “Alhamdulilah, the Angel will raise whilst people will be witnessing the battle.”


Talhah ra was carrying with one of his hand the injured Prophet saw and with the other, he was defending Prophet saw until he was hit on every single part of his body. By this time, the Prophet's saw tooth had been broken, his forehead slashed, his lips wounded and blood was streaming down his face and was drained of energy. Talhah ra carried the Prophet saw to safety and then chase the kuffar away until he was no longer able to move.


At that moment, Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah and Abu Bakr As-Sisddiq were far from the Prophet. When they came close to him to render assistance to him, the Prophet said, 'Leave me and go to your companion (meaning Talhah).'"
